clare: what moves through the place
‘Established in 1898, Claremont took its name from Claremont Estate, named in the 1870s by the property owner James Morrison in honour of his wife Clara. This kinetic artwork, affectionately called ‘Clare’ whilst being created in Andrew Stumpfel’s studio, is a pause-point in the landscape animated by the ocean wind whose daily arrival has been a timeless part of people’s experience of this place since long before the arrival of Europeans. The moving vanes made of 316 linished stainless steel are a design based on ‘Signal 3’ referencing Claremont’s railway heritage. An indicator of all that moves through the place; wind, light, the perpetual natural energies and flux of the rich social and cultural heritage of everyone in Claremont.’ [PTA plaque text 2023]
